Before ASMR had a name, before it filled algorithms and trends, creators like TheWaterwhispers ASMR were already there, experimenting, uploading, and helping shape what the genre would become.

She was also part of the early conversations that helped inform how the community would connect and organize itself, and was present during the initial discussions around what would become International ASMR Day.

Alongside the Camera

Ilse’s connection to ASMR did not begin with content. She experienced it long before discovering the online community around 2011, when it was still referred to as the Whisper Community. Those early videos helped her through sleepless nights and difficult periods. A year later, she picked up a camera and began creating in return.

She launched her channel in 2012 and gradually built a library that now spans hundreds of videos and tens of millions of views. Through it all, the approach remained the same. She did not perform ASMR so much as recreate what had helped her, then continued to share whatever else life brought with it.

She later shared her move from the Netherlands to Canada, building a new life in Toronto with her partner and adjusting to unfamiliar routines. Her videos from that period carry that sense of transition, not dramatic, not curated, just lived-in and authentic. I appreciated those updates, following along as her life unfolded during those years.

That has always been part of the appeal. Her channel does not separate ASMR from the rest of her life. It folds it in.

Style Built on Observation

Over time, Ilse’s approach has come to center on attention. Her videos slow things down, allowing small details to take on weight.

That instinct carries through her use of whispering, soft spoken narration, and no-talking videos, which form a steady foundation. These are not treated as categories, but as ways of listening, shaping, and responding to sound.

Her content expands into everyday spaces, journaling, organizing, cooking, and quiet domestic routines, where ordinary actions become the focus.

That same attention extends into tactile and sensory environments. Gardening, plant care, and aquariums appear as moments of quiet maintenance, while creative work like drawing unfolds as a process rather than a finished result. Even in more sensory-forward formats, such as eating sounds or trigger assortments, the pacing remains unhurried and deliberate.

Her work also moves outward. Travel-based videos capture ambient sound and atmosphere in different places, maintaining the same steady presence while broadening the environment.

In her earlier years, roleplays were a significant part of her catalog, medical exams, spa treatments, and teacher-style sessions, including videos that introduced elements of the Dutch language. While these formats appear less frequently now, they remain part of her foundation, reflecting the same attention to detail and sense of care that runs through all of her work.

A Community Taking Shape

In the early 2010s, the ASMR community was still finding its footing. It was smaller, more fragmented, and largely organized through comment sections and organized groups. There was no clear structure, no shared calendar, and very little sense of collective identity beyond the videos themselves.

Ilse was among creators helping introduce ASMR to a wider audience. Through interviews, media appearances, and contributions such as co-writing an early book on ASMR, she participated in a period when the community was still being defined. At the time, ASMR was unfamiliar and often misunderstood. Creators like her helped translate a personal experience into something others could begin to recognize and understand.

She was not just uploading consistently, she was actively engaging with others, encouraging collaboration, and contributing to conversations about what the community could become. She also helped support fellow creators, reinforcing a sense of connection.

Around that time, discussions began about creating a dedicated day to recognize ASMR and the people connected to it, a shared moment for creators and viewers alike to come together and participate.

Ilse helped bring that idea into the open, sharing it publicly in one of her early videos and inviting the wider community to take part in shaping it. It was framed as something collective, encouraging open participation and shared input across the community.

By April 9, 2012, International ASMR Day began to take shape as a shared moment within the community. In the years that followed, Ilse continued to participate in its growth, including collaborative videos that encouraged participation and connection across creators.

While it is more quietly observed today, International ASMR Day remains a reflection of how early community members helped frame ASMR as something global in scope, rather than regional or niche. It was built on informal conversations, early videos, and a handful of creators trying to bring people together across a wider audience. Ilse was there from the beginning.

Engagement Through the Years

As the genre began to grow and move further into the mainstream, Ilse’s channel and presence shifted toward balance and a sense of being. She shared parts of her journey to Canada, personal stories from her life in the Netherlands, and opened up about her experiences with mental health and therapy.

As her channel evolved, so did her approach. She continues to share and let people in, as she always has, but in a more measured way. Her videos often include small personal moments, from travel and life updates, like getting married, to glimpses into daily routines. Her long-standing interests, such as her love of animals and aquatics, remain part of her work. One of my favorites is her aquarium tour, where background sound, movement, and her natural enthusiasm come together to create something immersive and personal.

Her engagement with her audience is clear and consistent, whether through update videos, comment sections, or posts, and there is a special connection that one can attribute to Ilse’s openness and authenticity. In one instance, a simple exchange even helped bring back her much-loved video intro, a small but meaningful nod for long-time viewers.

There is a sense of someone who has settled into themselves. That same balance carries into her content: less urgency, more atmosphere, less focus on output, and more on presence.

Here & Now

More than a decade later, TheWaterwhispers ASMR continues to upload with a consistent and recognizable approach. Recently, she marked both her 14th year channelversary and her 800th video, two milestones that reflect the longevity and consistency of her work.

She continues to share updates and connect with her audience through Youtube and platforms like Patreon and Instagram, offering additional content and a more direct way to engage with her work. Her website, thewaterwhispers.com, serves as a central space for everything she creates.

At the same time, her life continues beyond what appears on screen. Work, personal projects, and long-standing interests shape her days in ways that are not always visible, but still inform the tone of what she shares.

Dank je, Ilse

Ilse began when ASMR had no clear structure. She helped shape what it could be, then stayed long after that work was done. Not to lead, not to reinvent, but simply to continue.

She entered at a formative stage, grounded her work in personal experience, and maintained a consistent creative identity over time. That combination places her among the quiet architects of ASMR, creators whose influence is felt not through visibility alone, but through the foundation others continue to build upon.

On International ASMR Day, her presence feels less like a reflection on the past and more like a continuation of that original moment.

Thank you, Ilse, for your contributions to the genre, the community, and for imagining everything it could be.
