There is something fitting about making Nanno ASMR the first feature of October. As the month leans into darker stories, strange characters and things that feel just a little off, her channel already occupies that space between relaxation and the uncanny. At times, it can feel a little like stepping into a Black Mirror episode, if that episode happened to involve whispering, tapping and personal attention.
But there is more to Nanno’s appeal than simply making ASMR creepy. She has a knack for taking familiar formats and putting them somewhere unexpected, creating videos that can make you relax, laugh, cringe or wonder what the heck you are watching. In that sense, there is something quietly provocative about her content that we just can’t get enough of.
From Indonesia to a Very Unusual ASMR World
Nanno’s first video was uploaded in early 2023, setting the tone almost immediately. Titled ASMR Reading Scary Stories: Creepypasta, the video features Nanno whispering her way through scary stories, making creepy and unsettling themes part of the channel from the very beginning.
Her early uploads show a creator testing different sides of ASMR, from soft whispers and personal attention to makeup roleplays, trigger testing, storytelling and simple everyday scenarios. But even as she explored the more familiar side of the genre, those first videos offered an early hint that Nanno ASMR would not be confined to straightforward sleep content.
Hailing from Indonesia, her channel is presented almost entirely in English, making its reach beyond her home country particularly notable. Even the name has an international connection: Nanno ASMR takes its name from the mysterious schoolgirl at the center of the Thai Netflix series Girl from Nowhere, a character known for exposing the darker sides of the people around her. While Nanno ASMR doesn’t simply recreate the character or the show, the name feels fitting for a creator who so often puts viewers into unusual situations with characters who can be helpful, suspicious, or downright unsettling.
Whispers, Tapping and a Rabbit Hole Worth Diving Into
At its core, Nanno understands what makes good ASMR. Soft speaking, whispering, tapping, personal attention, inaudible speech and close microphone sounds appear throughout her catalog. She also uses familiar roleplay structures that give viewers a clear scenario to settle into.
Then she bends those conventions.
Nanno blends her love of horror with her talent as an ASMRtist, using familiar triggers, unusual characters and her own sense of storytelling to create an experience that feels distinctly hers. It is not necessarily ASMR for everyone, but for those willing to stick around, there is a lot to discover, and plenty of relaxation and entertainment along the way.
Her channel description claims, “This ASMR channel has an identity crisis. Enjoy random relaxing surprises as you travel into this rabbit hole.” While the channel seems to have settled into its own identity over the years, the rabbit hole part feels spot on. Nanno actually began her channel with horror stories, but when those videos weren’t gaining much traction, she started experimenting with other topics. Eventually, she found her way back to horror through the Backrooms. Her first Backrooms video didn’t immediately take off, but months later it began gaining traction. Nanno started to wonder if she’d stumbled onto the kind of horror ASMR she was meant to make, and began leaning further into the genre.
Sweet, Strange or Sinister
Nanno’s performance style is really what ties her ideas together. She can be a reassuring caregiver, a demanding authority figure, an eccentric stranger or a personal friend, often without changing the softness of her delivery. That contrast lets a scenario become strange without losing the sensory experience that makes it ASMR.
What stands out most is how much thought goes into making these scenarios work. Nanno isn’t simply putting on a costume and whispering into a microphone; she is building characters, worlds and little stories around the ASMR itself. Her Are You a Visitor? video, inspired by the horror game No, I’m Not a Human, is a great example of that commitment. The editing, sound design and use of visual effects help recreate the unsettling atmosphere of the game, turning what could have been a straightforward roleplay into something that genuinely feels like an experience. As someone who has always been a little creeped out by the idea of mysterious “visitors,” it got under my skin in exactly the right way. And that attention to production isn’t incidental. Nanno has said that editing is actually her favorite part of the process, giving her the chance to reshape footage, add effects and turn an imperfect recording into something closer to what she originally imagined.
Then there are the videos that take that creativity somewhere completely bizarre. A Trip to Happy Land starts with the promise of a place where everyone is happy, but quickly reveals something much darker underneath the cheerful surface. It is strange, disturbing and surprisingly satirical, showing that Nanno isn’t afraid to use ASMR as a vehicle for storytelling that goes well beyond relaxation.
That combination of ASMR, character work, dark humor and entertainment is what gives her channel its distinctive voice.
Leaning In and Evolving
Since those early uploads, Nanno has continued to refine what she can do with ASMR. Having grown her channel to over 300 videos and nearly 300,000 subscribers, she has clearly found an audience for her particular approach to the genre. In fact, I’d argue that her channel is hitting its stride, with some of her more recent videos becoming some of her most popular. Many of them aren’t necessarily her darkest or most frightening, but still carry the unusual, uncanny quality that has become part of Nanno’s signature.
Her YouTube Shorts have become particularly successful too, with dozens of clips reaching millions of views. And people aren’t simply watching them; they’re engaging with them, leaving likes and comments and responding to the characters, scenarios and the delightful ASMR she creates. It’s another indication that Nanno’s appeal isn’t limited to the scares.
While Nanno tends to keep her personal life private, she occasionally lets viewers see the person behind the characters. Her supportive and charming boyfriend Atto makes appearances in some of her videos, and she has also shared more personal moments through subscriber milestones, including Q&As at 40,000 subscribers and a thank-you video at 100,000, in which she expresses her gratitude to her subscribers and encourages viewers not to give up on their dreams, no matter how crazy they might seem. She also promised that if she ever reaches one million subscribers, she’ll do a backflip.
Considering where the channel is now, perhaps that milestone is closer than we think. And knowing Nanno, I wouldn’t be surprised if that backflip somehow landed her straight into an alternate Backrooms universe, with god-knows-what waiting on the other side.
